Flaming red anniversary celebration

Designer Harri Koskinen is currently one of Finland’s most international designers. Koskinen has worked at the Iittala glass factory and made several popular objects for them, so he knows their glass inside and out. For the anniversary year, Koskinen has designed a flaming red, mouth-blown, carafe with a capacity of 125 cl. In addition to the normal Iittala stamp the carafes also have The special Anniversary Stamp. Absolutely fab!

UNG 06/07 is an arena for young Swedish designers, highlighting the essence of creative liberty in design. The project aims to increase the knowledge and widen the scope of new, innovative Swedish design, helping it reach new audiences. UNG was initiated by Svensk Form and Form/Design Center in 1998 and is now arranged for the sixth time. The previous exhibitions created quite a stir – both in Sweden and internationally. Louise Campbell can now call herself "Danish Designer of The Year 2005". Her design certainly has an unusual and stunningly beautiful edge. This is one of her brand new products, the "Very Round" chair, with laser cut shapes for Zanotta 2006.

Cult Design Spring 2006

With nature as an important source of inspiration the Swedish company Cult Design aim to make everyday life and the public environment more beautiful. Their idea is to work partly with in-house designers and partly with the aid of external talents, to create functional interior products with distinguishing and gorgeous forms.

First time I came in contact with their clean lines and sleek design was in late 2004, while I was redecoration my boyfriends apartment. I bought their square pots which are easy to combine in an indefinite number of ways to suit any modern home. Cult Design also make contemporary pots, vases, candlesticks, dishes and jars.

Eva Hild born in 1966 is a Swedish ceramic artist who lives and works in southwest of Sweden. She is currently exhibiting her artwork at Höganäs Museum. Eva builds her art in big forms were the clay will dry slowly and not collapse. When the form is ready and the clay is dry, she sands away at the surface and then spray it with a slurry of kaolin. The pieces are finally fired in stoneware temperature, about 1250°. Gorgeous pieces, dont you think?

The Savoy Vase Anniversary

2006 is the year when the Eskimo Woman’s Leather Breeches Vase (Eskimonaisen nahkahousut), later known as the Savoy Vase and nowadays simply as the Aalto Vase, turns 70. To celebrate this Iittala has extended the collection with new designs inspired by his original idea. The new models are only available during the anniversary year of 2006. This one is my personal favourite!

Word says that the Danish company Normann Copenhagen recently presented a new product. A simple vase that puts the flower at the centre. Together with the designers Boris Berlin and Poul Christiansen, Normann Copenhagen have created "Pot for one flower" - the vase that can delude the eye. A well known shape out of new materials. Take the vase in your hand and you will be surprised. Will be available in the shops from April. Recommended retail price is said to be € 21 / for a set of two.

Louise Campbell has step by step written her name into the long line of eminent Danish designers, winning a selection of prizes for her work. Recently, the Campbell pendant made jointly with Louis Poulsen won the prestigious international award; the iF Product Design Award 2005 in gold, and last year she won the Finn Juhl Architectural Prize. Another Scandinavian Design favourite of mine is the danish company Eva Solo. I adore her beautiful collection Cafe Solo not to mention her stylish products for cooking. Her cutting board is one of my best buys ever.

Marimekko is a leading Finnish textile and clothing design company, established in the 50's. The company designs, manufactures and markets high-quality clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags and other accessories under the Marimekko brand, both in Scandinavia and the rest of the world.

Marimekko's new winter collection 2005/06 offers a beautiful variety of festive fabrics. Warm red hues predominate in the colour scheme of the collection and patterns with ornamental or plant motifs, designed by Maija Isola, comprise most of the prints in the collection. I just love the red and white coffeemugs.

The general philosophy throughout the years has been that well-designed objects should be enjoyed by everyone, not merely by a wealthy few. If you are interested in the Scandinavian Design history you can read all about it and its core values in the book "Skandinavisk Design" by Charlotte and Peter Fiell.
